The Mormons
History
This group is officially known as The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-Day Saints. As we shall see, they are neither the Church of Jesus Christ nor are
they saints.
The beginnings of the Mormons date back to 1820, with a man named Joseph
Smith, Jr. Smith was born in Vermont, but his family moved to New York State when he was
still young.
In 1820, when Smith was only fifteen years old, he claimed that as he
was praying in the woods, God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to him. He tells us that
these heavenly visitors told him to not join any church because all churches were wrong and
not one church on earth was teaching the truth about God.
In later visions Smith claimed that an angel guided him to certain
"golden plates which were buried near his home. Smith further contended that it is from
these plates that the Book of Mormom was translated. Unfortunately for those of us
interested in seeing these plates Smith tells us that the angel came and took them away
after he was through translating them.
The early years of Smith were controversial to say the least. ln 1826,
Smith was accused of being a "disorderly person and an imposter", in Bainbridge New York.
During his trial, Smith admitted that he was frequently involved in magical arts and hunts
for buried go1d. He was found guilty of disturbing the peace.
By the time Smith died in 1844 he had forty eight known wives and
possibly twenty more undocumented wives. Smith died in Carthage Illinois. He was killed
when a mob stormed the jail in which he was being held for destroying the printing press of
an anti-Mormon newspaper. This act can in no way be excused, it was a vicious act of
murder. Furthermore such an act only guaranteed Smith’s going dawn in history as a Mormon
martyr.
Following this series of events, the Mormon movement was well on its way to becoming one of this country’s famous movements. Soon alter Smith's death, the
Mormons were led by Brigham Young to what is now Salt Lake City, Utah (except for a portion of the group who saw the next leader of the movement as being of linear descent
from Joseph Smith. This group is known today as The Re-organized Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints. They are not in union with the SaIt Lake Mormons. To this day, their
leader is a descendent from Joseph Smith. They are headquartered in Independence, Missouri).
Coupled with this unusual Mormon history, the theology 0f the Monmons is just
as peculiar. Their teachings are completely the opposite of Christianity Their doctrines
are so garbled and contradictory that they have been commonly referred to as a "maze".
We must understand that it was the Mormons who contended with Orthodoxy.
When Joseph Smith claimed that no church teaches the truth about God , he immediately
brought to bear the whole might of God’s Truth as contained in the Orthodox Church, upon
himself. It is critical to realize that, for the most part, the Mormons are not fully aware
of the teachings of the Orthodox Church. When members of this group are confronted with the
claims of Orthodoxy they are left without an adequate response. Either they must accept the
Truth of Orthodoxy, or they can, because of intense family and church social pressure
ignore it. But one thing is certain after a Mormon has been exposed to the Orthodox Church;
he or she will never have the same outlook on Church history again. For those Mormons who
find it more important to know the Truth, as opposed to the social pressure, they have
found their way into the Orthodox Church.
Theology
Among the heretical doctrines of the Mormons are the following: Please note that this is only a partial list of the Mormon deviations. We are here only dealing
with the major falsehoods, those which pertain especially to the Orthodox. An attempt to treat all the Mormon teachings would require volumes.
1, There is not only One God - there are many Gods
(polytheism.)
2. God is not a Spirit - He has body of flesh and bones.
3. God was once a man - He worked His way to Godhood.
4. Each Mormon male may also work his way to Godhood.
5. Jesus Christ is God - but is another God- separate from God, the Father.
6. Jesus Christ was not conceived by the Holy Spirit - He was conceived through Mary ‘s literal relations with Adam (of Garden of Eden fame), who was by then a god himself.
To properly understand Mormon teachings, we should have a basic understanding 0f their sources of authority. In addition to the Bible, the Mormons claim three other books considered equal to, If not greater than, the Bible. These are The Book Of Mormon, The Pearl Of Great Price, and Doctrine and Covenants.
The Book Of Mormons is thought by Mormons to be much more accurate than the Bible since, according to Mormon reasoning, the Bible has undergone numerous translations and distortions through the centuries. Therefore, when contradictions occur between the two books, and they do occur regularly, it is at this point where an "incorrect" translation has been rendered. This is no less than mere absurdity. The Mormons hesitate to admit
that their own Book Of Mormon has undergone over three thousand alterations since its publication. Add to this the fact that Joseph Smith claimed that an angel took the plates away, from which The Book Of Mormon was allegedly translated and it is apparent that the Mormon suspicion of the Bible is totally without basis. This becomes especially clear when one considers the scholarship which has consistently proven the Bible to be amazingly accurate.
Also considered authoritative to the Mormons are the words of their President, or "Prophet." Every living Mormon President is considered God’s "Prophet" on earth. He alone Is God’s mouthpiece and by him does God make His will known to man. The "Prophet" can at any time, claim a revelation and whatever he says will be regarded as the unquestionable will of God. If any Mormon "Prophet" claims a revelation which is in contradiction to a previous Presidents revelation, the latest utterance is considered to be the updated will of God.
There are also a number of Mormon theologians whom the Mormons consider authoritative. Among them, one of the most respected Mormon theologians is Talmage.. Outside of Mormonism, Talmage, who is deceased, enjoys little, if any, exposure.
Reading some of Talmage's works will enlighten anyone as to why this is so. Concerning the Nicene Creed, Talmage once wrote: "It would be difficult to conceive of a greater number of inconsistancies and contradictions expressed in words as few."
Now we let Mormonism speak for itself:
One God
Mormonism
"In the beginning the head of the Gods called a council of the Gods and they came together and concocted a plan to create the world and people it." Joseph Smith
"Gods exist, and we had better strive to prepare to be one with them." Brigham Young
"Many men say there is one God; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost are only one God! I say this is a strange God anyhow...all are crammed into one God." Joseph Smith
|
Orthodox Doctrine
"Before Me there was no God formed, and there will be none after Me." Isaiah, 43:10.
I am the first and I am the last, and there is no God besides Me." Isaiah, 44:6.
"God is the beginning of the whole universe. He Himself is without Beginning; but everything has origin from Him. He, however, is produced of none, but is He who is and who will be." St Cyril of Alexandria, 429 A.D.
|
God Is Spirit |
Mormonism
"The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man's; the Son also, but the Holy Ghost has not a body of flesh and bones but is a personage of spirit..." Doctrine and Covenants
"We affirm that to deny the materiality of God's person is to deny God; for a thing without parts has no whole, and an immaterial body cannot exist." Talmage
"In the first quote, the Holy Spirit is called a "personage of Spirit." Then in the second quote, Talmage says that "an immaterial body cannot exist." Therefore unknowingly, the Mormons define the Holy Spirit out of existence."

Orthodox Doctrine
"God is spirit; and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." John, 4:22.
"And He (Jesus) is the image of the invisible God...."Colossians, 1:15.
"We therfore call God Mimself the indescribable, the unfathomable, the invincible, the incomprehensible...who is invisible to every creature without exception...." St John Chrysostom, 386-387 A.D.
|
God Earned His Divinity |
Mormonism
"As man is, God once was; as God is, man amy become." Lorenzo Snow (former President.)
"Remember that God our Heavenly Father was perhaps once a child and mortal like we are and rose step by step in the scale of progress, in the school of advancement: has moved forward and overcome until He has arrived at the point where He now is." Orson Hyde
|
Orthodox Doctrine
"Even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God." Psalms, 90:2.
"The Author, therefore, since He is increate, is also certainly unchangeable. And who could this be except God?" St John Damascene, 743 A.D.
"First let there be laid as a foundation in your soul the doctrine concerning God: that there is one God alone, unbegotten, without beginning, unchangeable, and immovable...who neither began to live in time nor will ever cease to be..." St Cyril of Jerusalem, 350 A.D.
|
Mormon Males May Become God |
Mormonism
"Here then is eternal life- to know the only wise and true God, and you have got to learn to be gods yourselves." Joseph Smith
"They will continue to increase and multiply to all ages of eternity...to become not only sons of God, but gods themselves." Orson Pratt
|
Orthodox Doctrine
"This point hardly deserves a response seeing that it is only the Mormons who hold to such a bizarre teaching. Suffice it to say, that when the serpent tempted Eve in the garden, it said to her:"....you will be like God..." It was that very sin which expelled us from paradise. Apparently, the Mormons fail to see the folly of thinking they can become God."
|
Jesus Christ Is A God Seperate From The Father |
Mormonism
"Jesus, while on earth...repeatly testified of the unity existing between Himself and the Father, and the Holy Ghost. This cannot rationally be construed to mean that the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost are one in substance...nor that the names represent the same individual under different aspects." Talmage
"The Trinity - Three personages comprising the great presiding council of the universe have revealed to man...That these three are seperate individuals, physically distinct from each other, is demonstrated by the accepted records of divine dealings with man." Talmage
|
Orthodox Doctrine
"For in Him all the fulness of Deity dwells in bodily form." Colossians, 2:9
"Indeed, He was true God in the flesh." St. Athanasios, 358-362 A.D.
|
Jesus Christ Was Conceived By The Literal Relationship Between Mary And Adam |
Mormonism
"He was not begotten by the Holy Ghost...Jesus our elder brother was begotten in the flesh by the same character who was in the Garder of Eden, who is our father in heaven." Brigham Young
"Note: Adam went on to become the God of this planet - this is why Brigham Young calls him "our father in heaven."
"When the Virgin Mary conceived the child Jesus, the Father had begotten him in his own likeness. He was not begotten by the Holy Ghost." Brigham Young
|
Orthodox Doctrine
"Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for that which has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit." Matthew, 1:20
"And the angel answered and said to her, 'The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy offspring shall be called the Son of God." Luke 1:35
"Believe that this only begotten Son of God...was born of the Holy Virgin and of the Holy Spirit...." St. Cyril of Jerusalem, 350 A.D.
"But the power of God, coming upon the Virign, overshadowed her, and caused her, while yet a virgin, to conceive." St Justin the Martyr, 148-155 A.D.
