Orthodox Doctrine

"Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for that which has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit." Matthew, 1:20

"And the angel answered and said to her, 'The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy offspring shall be called the Son of God." Luke 1:35

"Believe that this only begotten Son of God...was born of the Holy Virgin and of the Holy Spirit...." St. Cyril of Jerusalem, 350 A.D.

"But the power of God, coming upon the Virign, overshadowed her, and caused her, while yet a virgin, to conceive." St Justin the Martyr, 148-155 A.D.

Further complicating the Mormon teachings are some rather embarrassing contradictions and inconsistencies within their own sources. included below is a list of certain quotes from Mormon sources which contradict their own beliefs." For example:

1. Mormons believe that God was a man who gradually attained godhood through his works. But this is what the Book of Mormon says:

  • a) "For do we not read that God is the same yesterday today, and forever, and in him there is no variableness neither shadow of changing?" Mormon 9:9
  • b) "And behold I say unto you he changeth not; if so he would cease to be God" Mormon 9:19
  • c) "For I know that God Is not a partial God, neither a changeable being: but he is unchangeable from all eternity to all eternity." Mormon 8:18
  • 2. Mormons believe In many Gods. But this Is what the Book of Mormon says:

  • a) "Is there more than one God? No." Alma 11:28,29
  • b) "And honor be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, which is one God." The Testimony of the Three Witnesses (located In the front of the Book of Mormons)
  • 3. Mormons believe that God has a body of flesh and bones. But this is what the Book of Mormon says:

  • a) "Believest thou that this Great Spirit who is God, created all things which are in heaven and in the earth? Alma 18:28
  • b) "Is God that Great Spirit that brought our fathers out of the land of Jerusalem?" Alma 22:9
  • 4. Also of very extreme embarrassment to the Mormons is the following quotation from the Book of Mormon. In Alma 7:10 the prophecy of Christ’s birth is recorded: "And behold, he shall be born of Mary, at Jerusalem which is the land of our forefathers." Obviously, even the most basic Sunday School course makes it clear that the Bible relates to us many times that Jesus was born at Bethlehem. Those who would still see the Book of Mormon as greater than the Bible should think again before they question the Bible.

Needless to say, Orthodox Truth completely denounces the distorted assertions of Mormonism. To call them blasphemous would not be unfounded. At the beginning of this section on Mormonism, It was seen how Joseph Smith claimed Heavenly vision as support for the validity of his new church. It is of interest to note that in Galatians 1:8, St. Paul tells us: "But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which we have preached to you, let him be accursed." Also in II Corinthians St. Paul further tells us that "even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light."
