Monday, March 25th 2002, Prayer of the week: Prayer of the Week on the Sunday of Orthodoxy

Let us Pray to the Lord. Lord have Mercy.

O Lord we give thanks for those holy fathers and mothers who struggled and suffered to preserve icons, those windows into heaven which You gave us. Without them we would not be able to see Your Glory and the Glory of Your saints. Today they are under attack again by our secular culture. Their use is being distorted into views not of Your kingdom but of the kingdom of Satan. We pray O Lord as You preserved them long ago so preserve them now so that we will still be able to see our destiny and the radiance of Your Kingdom. We pray in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Thursday, March 21st, 2002, Prayer of the week: The Prayer of St. Ephram

Let us Pray to the Lord. Lord have Mercy.

O LORD AND MASTER OF MY LIFE, TAKE FROM ME THE SPIRIT OF LAZINESS, DESPAIR, LUST OF POWER, AND IDLE TALK. (All make a prostration.)

BUT GIVE, RATHER, THE SPIRIT OF CHASTITY, HUMILITY, PATIENCE AND LOVE TO YOUR SERVANT. (prostration).

O LORD AND KING, GRANT ME TO SEE MY OWN TRANSGRESSIONS AND NOT TO JUDGE MY BROTHER, FOR BLESSED ARE YOU UNTO AGES OF AGES. AMEN. (prostration) Then all make 12 lesser reverences, saying for each:

O GOD, CLEANSE ME A SINNER AND HAVE MERCY ON ME.

Then the entire prayer is read and a single prostration is made.

Mon, March 11th 2002, Prayer of the week on the Last Judgement Matt. 25: 31-46

Let us Pray to the Lord. Lord have Mercy.

O Lord, our darkened souls are stained by depravity and laziness; our folly makes us shun all thought of death. How complacent we are! How can we flee the awesome thought of Judgment Day? When will we change our way of life? Our acts condemn us; and our deeds expose us. We turn to You as our loving Savior and beg You to forgive us of all malice and weakness. O Lord we cry out to You in faith we have sinned against you! O Good Shepherd and lover of mankind we pray that you will call us to enjoy Your presence at the right hand of Your glory! We pray in the name of the Father, son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Verses from the Vespers of the Last Judgment

Lord, You will come to judge the living and the dead, enthroned in glory and escorted by Your angels. Every man will stand in fear before You, trembling at the river of fire flowing past your throne.

The books will be opened and the works of all men laid bare: the vale of tears will echo with gnashing of teeth; the sinners will mourn in vain, as they depart to eternal damnation.

The righteous will rejoice, as they receive their reward, but the wicked will depart to eternal fire with wailing and horror.

I shudder in terror when I think of that dreadful day; I weep as I consider the darkness that will never see light: there the worm shall not cease, or the fire be quenched; the pain of those who reject you will never end.

Mon, March 5th 2002, Prayer of the Week on Luke 15: 11-32 Sunday of the Prodogal Son

Let us Pray to the Lord. Lord have Mercy.

O Lord You are a patient Father who gave us our inheritance. We squander it every day by our lust for bodily wants. We have eaten to excess, we harbor unclean thoughts and participate in forbidden activities. We have joined our consecrated temples which You purchased with Your life for all sorts of uncleanness. We need to be washed and return to home. You are always there waiting with a robe, a ring, new shoes and a feast.

During this Lenten season we pray that we will discover the Holy Spirit which You placed in us and acquire Him so that we can conquer all improper desires and bring them under Your control. We pray in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.
