An Abbreviated Prayerbook - Morning And Evening Prayers

Morning Prayers

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Glory to You, our God, glory to You.

O Heavenly King, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, Who are everywhere and fill all things, Treasury of blessings and Giver of Life, come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every impurity, and save our souls, O Good One.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us (3x).

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

O Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. O Lord, cleanse us from our sins; O Master, pardon our transgressions; O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Your name’s sake.

Lord, have mercy (3x).

Glory to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Our Father, Who are in Heaven, hallowed be Your Name. Your Kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages.

Having risen from sleep, we fall down before You, O Good One, and we sing to You the angelic hymn, O Mighty One: Holy, Holy, Holy are You, O God; through the Theotokos, have mercy on us.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit…

Having raised me from my bed and from sleep, O Lord, enlighten my mind and heart, and open my lips that I may praise You, O Holy Trinity: Holy, Holy, Holy are You, O God; through the Theotokos, have mercy on us.

…now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

The Judge will come suddenly, and the deeds of each shall be laid bare; but with fear do we cry at midnight: Holy, Holy, Holy are You, O God; through the Theotokos, have mercy on us.

Lord, have mercy (12x).

As I rise from sleep, I thank You, O Holy Trinity, for through Your great goodness and patience You have not been angry with me, an idler and sinner, nor have You destroyed me with mine iniquities, but have shown Your usual love for mankind; and when I was prostrate in despair, You have raised me up to keep the morning watch and glorify Your power. Enlighten also my spiritual eyes, and open my mouth that I may meditate on Your words, and understand Your commandments, and do Your will, and hymn You with a thankful heart, and sing praises to Your all-holy name: of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer 1, by St. Macarius the Great O God, cleanse me, a sinner, for I have done nothing good in Your sight; but deliver me from the evil one, and may Your will be in me, that I may open my unworthy lips without condemnation, and praise Your holy Name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer 2, by St. Macarius the Great Having risen from sleep, I run to You, O Master, Lover of mankind, and by Your loving-kindness, I strive to do Your work. I implore You: Help me at all times, in everything, and deliver me from every worldly, evil thing and every impulse of the devil. Save me and lead me into Your eternal kingdom. For You are my Creator, and the Giver and Provider of everything good, and in You is all my hope, and glorify You, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer 3, by St. Macarius the Great Lord, Who in Your abundant goodness and Your great compassion have granted me, Your servant, to go through the time of the night that is past without attack from any evil of the enemy. Grant also, O Master and Creator of all things, that I might accomplish Your will in Your true light and with an illuminated heart, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer 4, by St. Basil the Great Almighty Lord, God of the hosts and of all flesh, You live in the highest and care for the humble, Who search our hearts and affections, and clearly foreknow the secrets of men. Eternal and ever-living Light, in Whom is no change nor shadow of variation; O Immortal King, receive our prayers which we now offer to You from unclean lips, trusting in the multitude of Your mercies. Forgive all sins committed by us in thought, word or deed, consciously or unconsciously, and cleanse us from all defilement of flesh and spirit.

Grant us to pass the night of the whole present life with a watchful heart and sober mind, awaiting the coming of the radiant day of the appearing of Your only-begotten Son, our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ, when the Judge of all will come with glory to render to each according to their deeds. May we not be found fallen and idle, but awake and alert for action, ready to accompany Him into the joy and bridal chamber of His glory, where the voice of those who feast is unceasing and indescribable is the delight of those who behold the inexpressible beauty of Your countenance. For You are the true Light that enlightens and sanctifies all, and all creation sings hymns to You unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer 6, to Our Lord Jesus Christ My most merciful and all-merciful God, O Lord Jesus Christ! In Your great love You came down and become flesh in order to save all. Therefore I pray, save me by Your grace! If You should save me because of my deeds, it would not be a gift, but rather a duty. But You, my Christ, abundant in compassion and inexpressibly merciful, have said: “He who believes in Me shall live and never see death.” Thus, if faith in You saves the desperate: Save me also, for I believe that You are my God and Creator.

May my faith replace my deeds, O my God, for You will find no deeds to justify me. But may my faith be sufficient for all: may it answer for me; may it justify me; may it make me a partaker of Your eternal glory. And may Satan not seize me, O Word, and boast that he has torn me from Your hand and fold. Save me, O Christ, whether I want it or not, for You are my God from my mother’s womb. Come quickly to help me, for I perish.

Grant, O Lord, that I may now love You as once I loved sin itself, and that I may labor for You without laziness as once I labored for Satan the deceiver. Even more I will labor for You, my Lord and God, Jesus Christ, all the days of my life, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer 7, to the Holy Guardian Angel Angel of God, my Holy Guardian, given to me from heaven by God for my protection, enlighten me this day, and save me from all evil, instruct me in doing good deeds, and set me on the path of salvation. Amen.

Prayer to the Holy Theotokos O most holy Theotokos, my Lady, through your holy and all-powerful prayers banish from me, your lowly and wretched servant, despair, forgetfulness, unreasonableness, indifference, and all unclean, evil, and blasphemous thoughts from my wretched heart and my darkened mind. Quench the flame of my passions, for I am poor and wretched. Deliver me from my numerous and wicked memories and fantasies. Free me from all evil deeds. For blessed are you by all generations, and glorified is your most honorable name unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayerful Invocation to Our Saint Pray unto God for me O holy God-pleaser, ______, for I fervently flee unto You, the speedy helper and intercessor for my soul.

Here add prayers for the clergy, your relatives and friends, those alive and those who passed away.

It is truly right to bless You, O Theotokos, who are ever-blessed and most pure and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and more glorious beyond compare than the Seraphim; without defilement you gave birth to God the Word. True Theotokos, we magnify you.

A Prayer of the Optina Elders O Lord, grant me strength to meet with serenity everything forthcoming today. Grant me to submit completely to Your holy will. At every hour of this day guide and support me in all things. Whatever news may reach me in the course of this day, teach me to accept it with calmness and the conviction that all is subject to Your holy will.

In all my words and actions direct my thoughts and feelings. In all unexpected occurrences, do not let me forget that all is sent down by You. Teach me to deal straightforwardly and wisely with every member of my family, neither embarrassing nor saddening anyone.

O Lord, grant me strength to endure the fatigue of the coming day and all the events that take place during it. Direct my will and teach me to pray, to believe, to hope, to be patient, to forgive and to love. Amen.

Prayers Before Sleep

Prayers from O Heavenly King through Our Father (see on page 1).

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us; for at a loss for any defense, we sinners offer this prayer unto You as Master: have mercy on us.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit…

O Lord, have mercy on us, for in You have we put our trust. Do not be angry with us greatly, neither remember our iniquities; but look upon us now as You are compassionate, and deliver us from our enemies, for You are our God, and we are Your people; we are all the works of Your hands, and we call upon Your name.

…now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Open unto us the door of compassion, O blessed Theotokos, that hoping in You, we might not perish; but through You may we be delivered from all adversities, for you are the salvation of the Christian people.

Lord, have mercy (12x).

Prayer 1, to God the Father, by St. Macarius the Great

O Eternal God and King of all creation, Who have granted me to reach this hour: forgive the sins I have committed this day in deed, word, and thought. Cleanse, O Lord, my humble soul of all impurity of flesh and spirit. Grant me, O Lord, to pass through this night in peace; that, rising from my lowly bed, I may please Your most holy name all the days of my life, and thwart the enemies, physical and bodiless, that war against me. And deliver me, O Lord, from vain thoughts and evil desires which defile me. For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory: of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer 2, to Our Lord Jesus Christ, by St. Antiochus

O Ruler of all, Word of the Father, O Jesus Christ, Who are perfect: For the sake of Your great mercy, never depart from me, but always remain in me, Your servant. O Jesus, Good Shepherd of Your sheep, do not deliver me over to the rebellion of the serpent. Do not leave me to the will of Satan, for the seed of corruption is in me. But do, O Lord, Who is worshipped as God, holy King, Jesus Christ, guard me as I sleep by Your unwavering Light, Your Holy Spirit, by Whom You sanctified Your disciples. O Lord, grant me, Your unworthy servant, Your salvation upon my bed. Enlighten my mind with the light of understanding Your Holy Gospel; my soul, with the love of Your Cross; my heart, with the purity of Your word; my body, with Your passionless Passion. Keep my mind in Your humility, and raise me up at the proper time for Your glorification. For most glorified are You, together with Your unoriginate Father, and the Most Holy Spirit, unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer 3

O Lord our God, as You are good and the Lover of mankind, forgive all the sins I have committed today in word, deed and thought. Grant me peaceful and undisturbed sleep; send Your guardian angel to protect and keep me from all evil. For You are the Guardian of our souls and bodies, and unto You do we ascribe glory: to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer 4

O Lord our God, in Whom we believe and Whose Name we invoke above every name, grant us, as we go to sleep, relaxation of soul and body, and keep us from all fantasies and dark pleasures; stop the onslaught of the passions and quench the burnings that arise in the flesh. Grant us to live chastely in deed and word, that we may obtain a virtuous life, and not fall away from Your promised blessings; for blessed are You forever. Amen.

Prayer 5, by St. John Chrysostom

O Lord, do not deprive me of Your heavenly blessings. O Lord, deliver me from eternal torments. O Lord, if I have sinned in mind or thought, in word or deed, forgive me. O Lord, deliver me from all ignorance, forgetfulness, faint-heartedness, and stony insensibility. O Lord, deliver me from every temptation. O Lord, enlighten my heart which evil desire has darkened. O Lord, as a man I have sinned, but, as the compassionate God, have mercy on me, seeing the weakness of my soul. O Lord, send Your grace to my aid, that I may glorify Your holy name. O Lord Jesus Christ, inscribe me, Your servant, in the Book of Life, and grant me a good end. O Lord my God, even though I have done nothing good in Your sight, yet grant me by Your grace to make a good beginning. O Lord, sprinkle into my heart the dew of Your grace. O Lord of heaven and earth, remember me Your sinful servant, shameful and unclean, in Your kingdom. Amen.

O Lord, accept me in repentance. O Lord, forsake me not. O Lord, lead me not into temptation. O Lord, grant me good thoughts. O Lord, grant me tears, remembrance of death, and compunction. O Lord, grant me the thought of confessing my sins. O Lord, grant me humility, chastity, and obedience. O Lord, grant me patience, courage, and meekness. O Lord, implant in me the root of good, Your fear in my heart. O Lord, grant me to love You with all my soul and mind, and in all things to do Your will. O Lord, protect me from evil men, demons, and passions, and from every other unseemly thing. O Lord, I know that You do as You will: Your will be done also in me a sinner; for blessed are You unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer 6, to the Theotokos

O good Mother of the Good King, most pure and blessed Mary the Theotokos, pour out the mercy of your Son and our God upon my passionate soul. By your intercessions guide me unto good works, that I may pass the remaining time of my life without blemish, and attain paradise through You, O Virgin Theotokos, who alone are pure and blessed.

Prayer 7, to the Guardian Angel

O Angel of Christ, my holy guardian and protector of my soul and body, forgive me for all the sins I have committed this day. Deliver me from all the evil of my militant Enemy, that I may not anger my God by any sin. Pray for me, a sinful and unworthy servant, that you may show me worthy of the goodness and mercy of the All-holy Trinity, and of the Mother of my Lord Jesus Christ, and all the saints. Amen.

O Theotokos and Virgin, rejoice, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with You; blessed are you among women, and blessed is the Fruit of your womb, for you have borne the Savior of our souls.

Kissing your cross and making the sign of the Cross, say:

Guard me, O Lord, by the power of Your holy and life-giving Cross, and keep me from all evil.

Prayers Before Communion

A Prayer of St. John of Damascus

O Lord and Master Jesus Christ our God, Who alone have power to absolve men from their sins, for You are good and You love mankind: forgive all my transgressions done in knowledge or in ignorance, and make me worthy without condemnation to have communion of Your divine and glorious and pure and life-creating mysteries. Let them not be for my punishment, or for the increase of my sins. But let them be for my purification and sanctification, as a promise of the life and Kingdom to come, a defense, a help, a repulsion of every attacker and the removal of my many transgressions. For You are a God of mercy and generosity and love for mankind, and to You we ascribe glory, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Another Prayer of St. John of Damascus

Even standing before the doors of Your temple, I have not forsaken my wicked thoughts. But, O Christ my God, as You have justified the tax-collector, and have had mercy on the woman of Canaan and have opened the gates of paradise to the thief, open to me the interior depths of Your love for mankind and receive me as I come and repent before You. Receive me as You received the sinful woman and the woman with the flow of blood. For the first embraced Your most pure feet and received the forgiveness of her sins, and the second just touched the hem of Your garment and received healing. But I who am lost, daring to receive Your whole Body, may I not be burned; but receive me as You have received the, and enlighten my spiritual senses, burning up my spiritual faults by the prayers of her who gave birth to You without human seed, and of the heavenly angelic powers, for You are blessed unto ages of ages. Amen.

A Prayer of St. Basil the Great

I know, O Lord, that I have partaken unworthily of Your most pure Body and Your most precious Blood, and that I am guilty and drink condemnation to myself not discerning Your Body and Blood, O Christ and God. But daring upon Your generous loving-kindness I come to You Who have said: “He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me and I in him.” Be merciful, therefore, O Lord, and do not rebuke me, a sinner, but deal with me according to Your mercy, and let Your holy things be for my purification and healing, for enlightenment and protection, for the repulsion of every tempting thought and action of the devil which works spiritually in my fleshly members. Let them be for boldness and love for You, for the correction and grounding of my life, for the increase of virtue and perfection, for the fulfillment of Your commandments, for the communion of the Holy Spirit, for the journey of eternal life, for a good and acceptable answer at Your dread judgment, but not for judgment or condemnation. Amen.

Prayers After Communion

I thank You, O Lord my God, that You have not rejected me, a sinner, but have suffered me to be a partaker of Your holy things. I thank You that, unworthy as I am, You have enabled me to receive of Your most pure and heavenly gifts. But, O Master, Who love mankind, Who for our sakes did die and rise again, and gave us these awesome and life-creating Mysteries for the good and sanctification of our souls and bodies; let them be for the healing of soul and body, the repelling of every adversary, the illumining of the eyes of my heart, the peace of my spiritual powers, a faith unashamed, a love unfeigned, the fulfilling of wisdom the observing of Your commandments, the receiving of Your Divine Grace, and the attaining of Your Kingdom. Preserved by them in Your holiness, may I always remember Your Grace and live not for myself alone, but for You, our Master and Benefactor. May I pass from this life in the hope of eternal life, and so attain to the everlasting rest, where the voice of those who feast is unceasing, and the gladness of those who behold the goodness of Your countenance is unending. For You are the true desire and the ineffable joy of those who love You, O Christ our God, and all creation sings of Your praise forever. Amen.

Another Prayer

O Lord Jesus Christ our God: let Your holy Body be my eternal life; Your precious Blood, my remission of sins. Let this Eucharist be my joy, health, and gladness. Make me, a sinner, worthy to stand on the right hand of Your glory at Your awesome second Coming, through the prayers of Your most pure Mother and of all the saints. Amen.

A Prayer of St. Basil the Great

O Master Christ our God, King of the Ages, Maker of all things: I thank You for all the good things You have given me, especially for the communion with Your most pure and life-creating Mysteries. I implore You, O gracious Lover of Mankind: preserve me under Your protection, beneath the shadow of Your wings. Enable me even to my last breath, to partake worthily and with a pure conscience of Your holy things, for the remission of sins and unto eternal life. For You are the Bread of Life, the Fountain of Holiness, the Giver of all Good; to You we ascribe glory, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

The Prayer of Simeon

Master, now let Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word. For mine eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared before the face of all people: a light to enlighten the Gentiles and to be the glory of Your people, Israel. Amen.

The Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty,
Maker of Heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God,
the Only-begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages;
Light of Light: true God of true God; begotten, not made;
of one essence with the Father, by Whom all things were made;
Who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven,
and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became man.
He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried;
And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures;
And ascended into Heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And He shall come again, with glory, to judge the living and the dead;
Whose kingdom shall have no end..
And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life;
Who proceeds from the Father; Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified;
Who spoke by the prophets.
In One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.
I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins.
I look for the resurrection of the dead,
And the life of the age to come. Amen.

The Ten Commandments

1. I am the Lord Your God, you shall have no other gods before Me.
2. You shall not make for You any graven image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them, nor serve them.
3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God.
5. Honor your father and your mother, that it may be well with You, and that your days may be long upon the earth.
6. You shall not murder.
7. You shall not commit adultery.
8. You shall not steal.
9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife; you shall not covet your neighbor’s house, nor his field … nor anything that is your neighbor’s.

The Beatitudes

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the sons of God.
Blessed are they that are persecuted for righteousness sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when men shall revile you and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven.

Prayer During Lent

O Lord and Master of my life, do not permit me the spirit of laziness, despair, lust of power, and idle talk.

But give, rather, the spirit of chastity, humility, patience and love to Your servant.

O Lord and King, grant me to see my own transgressions and not to judge my brother, for blessed are You unto ages of ages. Amen.

Psalm50 (51)

Have mercy on me, O God, in Your great mercy, and in Your abundant compassion blot out my transgression.
Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin.
For I know my sinfulness and my sin is before me continually.
Against You only have I sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, that You may be justified in Your words and win when You are judged.
For I was conceived in iniquities and in sins my mother gave me birth.
But You love truth; the hidden and secret things of Your wisdom You have made known to me.
You will sprinkle me with hyssop and I shall be clean. You will wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.
Make me hear joy and gladness. The bones that have been humbled will rejoice.
Turn Your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from Your presence or take Your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and strengthen me with Your ruling Spirit.
I will teach Your ways to the lawless, and sinners will return to You.
Deliver me from bloodshed, O God, O God of my salvation. My tongue will rejoice in Your righteousness.
O Lord, You will open my lips and my mouth will declare Your praise.
For if You desired sacrifice, I would have given it. You take no delight in whole burnt offerings.
A sacrifice for God is a broken spirit; a broken and humbled heart God will not despise.
Gladden Zion, O Lord, with Your goodwill, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built.
Then You will delight in the sacrifice of righteousness, in offering and whole burnt offerings. Then they will offer young bulls on Your altar.

Psalm 90 (91)

He who lives by the help of the Most High will pass the night in the protection of the God of Heaven.
He will say to the Lord, “You are my protector and my refuge, my God,” and in Him I will hope.
For He will deliver you from the trap of the hunters and from the embarrassing word.
He will overshadow you with His shoulders, and under His wings you will hope. His truth will surround you with armor.
You will not be afraid of any terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day--
of a thing going by in the dark, of an accident or a noonday demon.
A thousand will fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.
Only with your eyes you will look on, and you will see the reward of sinners.
For You, O Lord, are my hope; You made the Most High Your refuge.
No evils will come to you, and no scourge will come near your dwelling.
For He will command His angels regarding you to guard you in all your ways.
They will lift you on their hands, lest you strike your foot against a stone.
You will step on the asp and the adder; the lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.
“Because he has set his hope on Me, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows My name.
He will call to Me and I will answer him. I am with him in trouble, I will deliver him and glorify him.
With a long life I will satisfy him, and I will show him My salvation.”

The Prayers Of The Hours

At every season and every hour, in heaven and on earth, You are worshipped and glorified; O Christ our God, Who are long-suffering, merciful and compassionate; Who love the just and show mercy upon the sinner; Who call all to salvation through the promise of blessings to come: O Lord, in this hour receive our supplications, and direct our lives according to Your commandments. Sanctify our souls, hallow our bodies, correct our thoughts, cleanse our minds; deliver us from all tribulations, evil and distress. Encompass us with Your holy Angels, that guided and guarded by them, we may attain to the unity of the faith and to the knowledge of Your unapproachable glory, for You are blessed unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer Before Reading The Holy Scriptures

Make to shine in our hearts, O Master Who love mankind, the incorrupt light of Your divine knowledge, and open the eyes of our mind to the comprehension of the preaching of Your Gospel. Implant also in us the fear of Your blessed commandments that, trampling down all carnal desires, we may pursue a spiritual way of life, both thinking and doing all things well-pleasing unto You. For You are the enlightenment of our souls and bodies, O Christ God, and unto You do we send up glory, together with Your Father, Who is without beginning, and Your all-holy, and good, and life-creating Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
