Canon Of Repentance

Priest: Blessed is our God always, now and ever and unto ages of ages.

People: Amen. O Heavenly King, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth Who are everywhere and fills all things. Treasury of Blessings, and Giver of Life: Come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every impurity, and save our souls, O Good One.

Holy God! Holy Mighty! Holy Immortal! Have mercy on us. (3)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

O most Holy Trinity: Have mercy on us. Lord: Cleanse us from our sins. Master: Pardon our transgressions. Holy One: Visit and heal our infirmities, for Your name's sake.

Lord, have mercy. (3)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your Kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Priest: For Yours is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory: of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages.

People: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever unto ages of ages. Amen.

Come, let us worship God our King! Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ, our King and our God! Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, our King and our God!

Psalm 50: Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your loving kindness; according to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Your sight -- that You may be found just when You speak, and blameless when You judge.

Behold I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me. Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, and in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom.

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness, that the bones which You have broken may rejoice. Hide Your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your generous Spirit. Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners shall be converted to You. Deliver me from blood guiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall show forth Your praise. For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart -- these, O god, You will not despise.

Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion; build the walls of Jerusalem. Then You shall be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering; then they shall offer bulls on Your altar.

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us, for laying aside all excuse, we sinners offer to You, as to our Master, this supplication: Have mercy on us!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:

O Lord, have mercy on us, for in You we have put our trust. Do not be angry with us, nor remember our iniquities, but look down on us even now, as You are compassionate, and deliver us from our enemies; for You are our God, and we are Your people; we are all the work of Your hands, and we call on Your name.

Now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

O Blessed Theotokos, open the doors of compassion to us whose hope is in you, that we may not perish, but be delivered from adversity through you. For you are the salvation of the Christian people.

TONE 5
FIRST SONG

People:When Israel walked on foot in the sea as on dry land, on seeing their pursuer Pharaoh drowned, they cried: Let us sing to God a song of victory.

Refrain: Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me.

When I, wretched one, consider the many wrongs I have done, I shudder at the terrible day of judgment. However, I have hope in the mercy of Your compassion; like David, I cry out to You: Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your compassion;

Refrain:Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me.

Open to me the doors of repentance, O Giver of Life. From the early dawning my spirit rises up toward Your holy temple, though the temple of my body is totally desecrated. But in that You are compassionate, purify me by the loving kindness of Your mercy.

Glory:Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

O All-Powerful, All-Sustaining Lord,
I know how much tears can do:
Hezekiah was rescued at the very gates of death;
The sinful woman was saved from her many years of transgressions;
The Publican was justified above the Pharisee
And I pray, repeating with him, have mercy one me.

Now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

O Theotokos, direct me into the path of salvation. I have desecrated my soul with shameful sins, for I have wasted my life in sloth, but through your prayers deliver me from all impurity.

THIRD SONG

People:There is none holy as You, O lord my God, Who have exalted the power of Your faithful, O good One, and strengthened us on the rock of Your confession.

Refrain:Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me.

I, too, come like the Prodigal Son, O Compassionate One. My whole life I have wasted away; estranged, I have dissipated my wealth which You, O Father, gave me. Accept me, for I repent, O God, and have mercy on me.

Refrain:Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me.

Now the bosom of the Father is open wide. Accept me also, O Lord, as the Prodigal Son, O Compassionate One, that in thanksgiving I may glorify You.

Glory:Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Glory to You, who thus far have not destroyed me; Glory to you, for You have borne with my transgressions. Receive me now as I return, O Compassionate Father, Only Begotten Son, Holy Spirit, My Creator and my Lord, have mercy on me.

Now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

O God, You have shown all Your goodness toward me; Do not look upon my many transgressions, for You are the Doer of Good Through the prayers of Your mother.

FOURTH SONG

People:Christ is my power, my God and my Lord, the Holy Church divinely sings, crying with a pure mind, keeping festival in the Lord.

Refrain:Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me.

O, woe is me! What shall I be? What can I do? I committed sin, and I, without conscience, was not afraid of the Master. I am therefore condemned even before the trial. Save me, O Good and True Judge, who have caused me to return, though I have angered You above all men.

Refrain:Have mercy one me, O God, have mercy on me.

I have sinned, O Lord; I have sinned before You. Cleanse me! There is no sinner among men whom my sins have not surpassed.

Glory:Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

O Lover of Man, who desire all to be save, do raise me up and receive me, O Compassionate One, for You are good.

Now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

FIFTH SONG

People:Illumine with Your Divine Light, I pray, O Good One, the souls of those who with love rise early to pray to You, that they may know You, O Word of God, as the True God, Who recalls us from the darkness of sin.

Refrain:Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me.

I lie rejected in the deep abyss of passion, yet I call on the unlimited Source of Your Compassion, O Heavenly Steward, save me.

Refrain:Have mercy one me, O God, have mercy on me.

O Source of Compassion, give me at this time tenderness and yearning, that I may weep over my evils an immeasurable sea.

Glory:Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

The time of my life is short; I am full of disease and evil deeds: But in repentance accept me, call me back to reason, that I may be a stranger neither to acquisition, nor to nourishment. You Yourself, O Savior, be merciful to me.

Now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

You are our weapon, you are our defense, O Virgin Theotokos. You are the protectress of those who flee to you. Even now I draw near to you in prayer, that I may be rid of my enemies.

SIXTH SONG

People:Beholding the sea of life surging with the flood of temptations, I run to Your calm harbor and cry to You: Raise up my life from corruption, O Most Merciful One.

Refrain:Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me.

Be merciful, O my Savior, Son of God; You who with a word healed the possessed, have mercy. Speak to me, as

Refrain:Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me.

You did to the thief, with the voice of compassion: Truly I say to you, you will be with me in paradise, when I come in my glory.

Refrain:Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy one me.

Only Savior, do not expect of me fruits worthy of repentance, for I have been emptied of all my strength. Give me a broken heart, give me true poverty of spirit, that I may offer these to You as an acceptable sacrifice.

Glory:Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

I have neither the boldness, O lover of Man, to gaze and to see the immeasurable height of my sins against heaven; nor the reason to be called Your prodigal son: yet do find me worthy, even if without cause, You whose mercy is beyond measure.

Now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

O Virgin Mary, pray in the hour of my trial to the Judge born of you. Beseech Him to be merciful to me and to save me, the condemned one, for you are mankind's only intercessor.

Kontak:Why do you engulf yourself in sin, my soul? Why do you do the will of the devil? In what do you place your hope? Desist from sin, and return to God, Crying out in tears: Have mercy on me a sinner, O Merciful Lord.

SEVENTH SONG

People:An angel made the furnace throw dew on the holy children, But the command of God consumed the Chaldeans and prevailed upon the tyrant to cry: Blessed are You, O God of our Fathers.

Refrain:Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me.

Wretched me, I dare not with my eyes look up into heaven, due to my evil deeds. Rather, like the Publican, I bemoan my sins and cry out to You: Cleanse me a sinner and deliver me from the hypocrisy of the Pharisee, Only Compassionate One, God of our Fathers.

Refrain:Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me.

Thieves have shattered my mind; they have abandoned me with my wounds and my transgressions, and I am barely alive. Yet heal me, O God of my Fathers.

Glory:Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Seeing the hopelessness of my greatly diseased soul, continue in Your patience, and do not cut me down, O Christ, like that accursed fig tree, O God of our Fathers.

Now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Come to my aid, O most pure one, and confound the unrelenting attacks of the evil one by your prayers.

EIGHTH SONG

People:You made the flame sprinkle the saints with dew, and burned the sacrifice of a righteous man with water. For You alone, O Christ, do all that You will. We exalt You throughout all ages.

Refrain:Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me.

O Lord, You have removed the hardness of my heart; now my soul, dead in passion, cause to rise O Good One, that I may in tenderness bring palm branches to You, O Master, as Victor over Hades. Grant that I may attain to eternal life, O Only Lover of Man, to praise in song Your majesty and compassion to all ages.

Refrain:Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me.

My soul is engulfed with unworthy thoughts, wretch that I am! I have desecrated my soul by immoral passions, and am surrounded by the darkness of despair. Through repentance, O my God, enlighten me by Your Light, that I may glorify You with thanksgiving throughout all ages.

Glory:Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

I lie on the bed of despair, burning with sinful infirmity. Therefore, O Physician of the Sick, visit me with Your loving kindness. Do not allow me to sleep the terrible sleep of death, O Most Merciful One, that I may cry to you O Lord, Giver of Mercy, Glory to You!

Now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

O Most Holy Mother of God, Defense of Christians, save your servant who habitually calls to you in sincerity. Oppose my evil and vain thoughts, that I may cry to you: Rejoice, O Ever Virgin!!

NINTH SONG

People:It is impossible for men to see God, upon whom the orders of angels dare not gaze; But through you, O all pure one did the Word Incarnate appear to men. With the heavenly hosts we magnify Him, and you we call blessed.

Refrain:Have mercy one me, O God, have mercy on me.

I come to You Jesus, Son of God who for my wretched sake accepted the likeness of a Servant; through the intercessions of your bodiless hosts, have mercy on me.

Refrain:Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me.

I fall down before You, my Deliverer; through the prayers of Your Precursor, and of all Your Prophets and our Fathers, have mercy on me.

Refrain:Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me.

I call to You, O Lover of Man, the only Harbor and Hope for sinners, the Savior of all; through the prayers of Your Disciples who proclaimed You to us as Savior, have mercy on me.

Refrain:Have mercy on me ,O God, have mercy on me.

I lift up my hands to You, O Son of God, who suffered for sinners; through the prayers of Your Martyrs who shed their blood for Your sake, have mercy on me.

Glory:Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

I am not worthy to look up and gaze upon the heights of heaven due to my many lies. I am bound by the many links of an iron chain, so that I cannot lift up my head. But, O Compassionate Lord, reveal through me all Your goodness; and, though I am not worthy, save me and have mercy upon me through the prayers of Your righteous ones.

Now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

You were born of the Most Holy Virgin, and condescended to live on earth with men, due to Your goodness; at the intercessions of all the saints who have found favor with You from all ages, have mercy one me.
